Delhi II

Deja vu this morning - same nice breakfast at the B&B, pick-up by Mr. Singh for the ride to the embassy, security check-in at the embassy, more window 17 and forms and rifling through the paperwork we brought. We had to turn in the medical exam and pictures we got yesterday as well as a bunch of the forms and personal information we had brought with us, pay the fee, and fill out the visa application. This was different from the likely process that we were given by our adoption agency, so we were hoping everything was still ok to get done today. After we turned in the application, we had to wait for a while (maybe an hour) while they processed it. Then we had a short interview with an official (very nice) at window 14, who told us after the interview that everything would be completed today. I will go back at 3:30 today to get her visa, and the embassy stuff will be done! It went very smoothly.

We got out of the embassy at about 10:30, so we had Mr. Singh take us to the India Gate, which is a large impressive monument that also has beautiful parks surrounding it. In the park area is a large children's play park with several different sections of playground equipment. We thought Eva would be interested in some active play, climbing, etc., but she didn't want to leave physical contact with me. She is very clingy to me, and is often only comforted by me. I am enjoying it, but mom is getting the short end of the love. We think this makes sense with the chaotic life we have these few days - zeroing in on one person for security amidst ever-changing and foreign circumstances. In and out of the embassy, up and down streets, in and out of Mr. Singh's car, wild dogs roaming the streets (Eva is afraid of dogs). I keep telling her that this is not our real life, and things will stabilize soon. After the India Gate and the non-playground, we wanted to pick up lunch on the way home and kind of wanted American, so we decided on McDonald's. It is true that they don't serve beef, but they had good veggie burgers and chicken burgers, and the fries were the same. We got back to the B&B for lunch, and Eva and mommy are having nap time now.

Vonda is feeling much better (see yesterday's post about the doctor's visit and medication we got). She was greatly improved today, hopefully that will continue. It is very hot and humid; hydration is very important.

By the time Eva wakes up from her nap and I/we get back from the embassy, it will be well into the afternoon (4:30-ish) and probably no time or desire for sightseeing or shopping. Down time in the afternoon has been awesome after busy mornings. Eva is doing super great with everything, but the busy mornings being yanked around Delhi have been semi-stressful for her at times. With a whole day tomorrow with no plans, and Vonda feeling better, we are hoping to check out some shopping based on David and Sofi's recommendations, and whatever else we feel up for.

I'll comment again on all of your emails and blog comments - you have no idea the difference it makes for us to feel the support of our community of friends and family back home.

Oh,Ed,thank-you so much for all the details of your blogs and emails. It is so great to be able to, in a sense, travel along with you and experience what you are experiencing. It's almost like being a mouse in your suitcase. Ha! So happy that all is going so well and you and Vonda are making such a connection with Prathi. We are so happy she is clinging to you. A daddy is the safety in a little girls life and she needs that right now. I'm sure Vonda feels you are her safety right now too as she has been so sick and you have been there for her. Thank-you
kind son-in-law for caring for your family so well. Love, Mom

Woke up at three this morning with the burden to pray for Vondaful, I am so glad she is feeling better--God is so good. Can't wait to see you all!

Man somewhere in the world, someone loves paperwork! Someday they will open up a back office and paper will come crashing out.

Glad that part is mostly done.

It is so endearing that Eva has chosen you to be her cling-on. Maybe it's the hair...

Very thankful that Vonda is doing better. I hope your finding more rest today.

Ed,

Glad to hear Vonda is feeling better and Eva is finding comfort in her parents during this amazing transition for her.

I was struck by your comment about how she clung to you at the park. The busy hustle and bustle of airports, the Embassy, and the streets of Delhi is a stark contrast to the relatively quiet world of a rural orphanage that Prahtiba is used to. I can only imagine how overwhelming this is for her. It will be so great to get her home to your quiet street in Wisconsin where she can experience the routine and comfort that is her new life.

I am glad she had you to cling on to in the park, I am sure that felt great. My girls are 5 and 3 and I still love it when they cling to me when they are scared or nervous in new situations.

We have a great book, "Why a Daughter Needs a Dad" and one of my favorite quotes is...

"a daughter needs a dad who will let her know that while she may not be the center of someone else's world, she is the center of his."

Prahtiba needs that so much right now and I am so happy she has found that as she is moving through the transition home...

(Vonda, I am so glad she is a girly girl, my girls will love to play dress up with her!!)

I echo the others. It's so good to hear about all that's happening with you. My joy is overflowing for you guys.
Glad to hear Vonda is on the upswing!
My children, too, seem to cling to one of us at a time--for a season. Though I understand, I, too, get a little jealous when it isn't me!

Love you!

Gracie was a daddy's girl but since she turned about 5 that changed. Now she just beats up daddy - looking forward to hearing all about the trip home!

Ed - thanks for all the details, we love sharing your experiences.
Vondi - I am so happy to hear that you are feeling better. Almost time to leave the 'hospital maternity ward' and be home together as a family. We look forward to your return and pray for this last long journey.

I am so pleased that Vonda is feeling better. How is Sarah doing? Is she healthy?
Enjoy your day off tomorrow! I hope you all get to see some fantastic things!
p.s. I would be scared of wild dogs, too!

Boy, I thought Amy's comment about you being in the maternity ward was so insightful. There are many parallels and it's a fascinating new angle with which to process all of this. Ed, I'm thinking about you guys a lot, especially when I just started listening to Fannin Street by Tom Waits. That's what prompted me to check your blog. When you guys are ready to come back we'll all be here. The pictures are great but we want the real thing!

I shudder to think that it may have been food from McDonalds that actually helped Vonda.

We are thrilled for your adventure here at the Jackalope Ranch and we await each post as we praise God for the calming of the storm in the whole process.

We have so enjoyed watching the "birth" of Eva, from the first post about your approval, to the latest one of your coming home. I can not even imagine the excitement you felt bringing her into your home and showing her the room you two have so lovingly prepared for her. We have fallen in love with her, and can't wait to meet her soon! We hope the transition is going well & that you are able to catch up on lost sleep :)
Looking forward to updates soon!
